Here comes the fun!

Want a reason to watch the Big Ten Tournament next week?

Northwestern's win over Minnesota on Monday is the only one you need.

On paper, the last-place Wildcats didn't stand much of a chance against a Minnesota team that had won five of its last seven games and was sitting among the top teams in the conference standings.

But Northwestern, thanks to hot shooting and double-figures from three players, pulled off the 62-53 upset anyway, proving true the old adage that "on any given night…"

That is what the conference tournament is all about, especially for teams in the lower half. It's about the hope that maybe, just maybe, they'll heat up at the exact right time, catch some team fumbling at the exact wrong time and…live to see another day.

That's what first-year Northwestern coach Joe McKeown is talking up right now. "Play the way you did against Minnesota and watch out. We'll be one of the most dangerous teams in the tournament."

Remember Illinois last year? Same thing.

The Illini finished in ninth place last season but got hot just as the Big Ten Tournament started. They won three straight games and wound up advancing all the way to the championship game before losing to Purdue by a mere bucket, 58-56.

So, stay tuned Big Ten fans, the most exciting, most wonderfully unpredictable time of the year is almost upon us!
