Now playing Robbie Hummel
Feb 12 2008, 9:15 PM Topic: Talking Big Ten

You ready for a game? In the spirit of nearly every college basketball analyst trying to compare Robbie Hummel's game to a player, past or present, I thought we should do the same right here.

I've heard all the analysts' comparisons. There's been a reference to Larry Bird, another one to Rick Barry and countless others to players I'm way too young to have seen play.

My comparison, you ask? I'd have to go with Keith Van Horn, the former Runnin' Ute star. Though not nearly as prolific as Van Horn back in the mid 1990s, Hummel is every bit as dominant.

I know a statement like that may not seem like much if you base it on the latter stages of Van Horn's NBA career, but let's not forget that he shot better than 50 percent and averaged 20.8 points and 8.8 rebounds per game during his impressive four-year college career.

Hummel, who's averaged 20.7 points per game in his last three contests, is starting to transform into a go-to scorer, the kind Van Horn was when he led Utah to three conference titles, a Sweet 16 and an Elite Eight.

Who does Hummel most remind you of? Post it here as a comment, and let's see if we can solve this little riddle.

As a Purdue fan, I hope those who compare him to Larry Bird are right. Any time you can be mentioned in the same breath as Larry Legend means you are something pretty special.

Yikes, Bird and Barry are probably aggresive comparisons. Those are all time greats. To me, in the modern era, he reminds me more of a Mike Dunleavy or Shane Battier. He is fundamentally outstanding. If I had to stretch, I think Scottie Pippen is a good comparison because of his ability to dribble, defend speed and knock down 3's even though he is so tall.

Brian Cardinal, with more skill scoring and handling the ball, yet post moves that aren't as good.

Mike Dunleavy....with a sprinkling of Larry Byrd
