Madison - Even after redshirting last season, University of Wisconsin freshman forward Ryan Evans possesses an offensive game that can best be described as being in the developmental stage.

However, Evans showed during the annual Red-White scrimmage Sunday at the Kohl Center that he could contribute this season because of his athletic ability, hustle and tenacity on both ends of the court.

"I see myself as being able to bring energy," Evans said after helping the White to a 45-36 victory in front of a crowd of about 2,500. "It's fun."

Evans played 31 minutes and finished with seven points (four of which came on dunks), a game-high eight rebounds, two assists and two blocks.

"To be able to see the floor again felt real good," said Evans, who made 3 of 7 field-goal attempts. "It's been a year. Coach Ryan will play who is fit to play but that's something I can bring."

Asked afterward about Evans' effort, UW coach Bo Ryan first poked fun at the question and then agreed that Evans showed promise.

"He's here on a scholarship to play basketball," Ryan cracked. "Why wouldn't he hustle and have effort? That's what our guys do.

"He is a guy who is so raw. We saw that in him. I don't know what it's going to be like this year, but down the road, Ryan Evans has a great chance of contributing to the team . . . Let's see what happens."

Big shots: Senior guard Trevon Hughes hit two game-winning shots last season: at Virginia Tech and in the NCAA tournament against Florida State.

On Sunday, Hughes quickly ended a postgame contest in which players from both teams lined up to hit a half-court shot.

Hughes got off the first shot and drained it.

"We do that when we're on the road," Ryan said. "We'll a lot of times end practice with half-court shots. Or when we're in the NCAA tournament, we always make a half-court shot and run off the court."

"Trevon hits the first one. I don't know if it's a good sign. We'll find out."

Overtime: Sophomore guard Rob Wilson made only 4 of 11 field-goal attempts but appeared confident and assertive and had a team-high 10 points for the Red team . . .

Junior forward Keaton Nankivil, who showed flashes of solid play last season, looked good and finished with 13 points and seven rebounds for the White . . .

Junior forward Jon Leuer made only 2 of 12 field-goal attempts for the Red team.
