MADISON, Wis. -- The Wisconsin men's hockey team (3-2-1, 1-2-1 WCHA) swept New Hampshire (2-4-1, 2-0-0 Hockey East) Saturday with a 6-1 victory for a Happy Halloween at the Kohl Center.
The Badgers pushed the energy level in the first period, but did not have anything to show for it until 2:54 into the second period when sophomore Jordy Murray (Faribault, Minn.) tipped in a shot near the left circle from junior Ryan McDonagh (Arden Hills, Minn.).
Wisconsin scored two more goals in the second period to gain a three-goal lead. Senior Ben Grotting (Birmingham, Ala.) scored on a centering pass from junior Sean Dolan (St. Louis) at 15:25. Junior Brendan Smith (Mimico, Ontario) also received an assist on the goal.
Murray notched his second goal of the evening and his third goal of the season at 14:06, intercepting the puck at the blue line and scoring top shelf, glove-side, against New Hampshire's Brian Foster.
The Badgers scored two more goals before New Hampshire ever found the net in the third period. Freshman John Ramage (St. Louis) found the net off a slap shot which tipped in off the goalkeeper's glove at 12:42. Smith and senior captain Blake Geoffrion (Brentwood, Tenn.) received the assists on the play.
With 7:04 left in the third period, senior Aaron Bendickson's (Thief River Falls, Minn.) shot on net bounced off new UNH goaltender Matt DiGirolamo and Dolan put in the rebound for UW's fifth goal. Smith received a third assist on the goal.
The Wildcats were able to muster up a goal with 4:53 left in the third period. Steve Moses scored on a rebound from Mike Borisenok to prevent the shutout. Greg Burke also notched an assist on the play.
Senior Michael Davies (St. Louis) capped off the scoring with 1:39 left in the game, scoring off a fake from a centering pass from Murray and a second assist from Ramage.
Wisconsin went 1-for-2 on the power play and tallied 45 shots, while the Wildcats went 0-for-5 on the power play and totaled 22 shots.
Junior goaltender Scott Gudmandson (Sherwood Park, Alberta) made 21 saves in the win. Foster stopped 30 shots for the Wildcats, while DiGirolamo had nine of his own.
The Badgers return to action next weekend as they host Border Battle rival, Minnesota.
