BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Hoosiers opened the 2009 season with the Indiana Open. The small meet consisted primarily of Indiana University runners, and it provided an opportunity for IU to get a competitive run in to start the season. The women's team was led by Chelsea Blanchard, who finished second behind only assistant coach Rebecca Walter. The men were led by redshirt freshman Zach Mayhew and junior Andy Weatherford who finished first and second respectively.

Mayhew finished in 25:31.96 for the win, and Weatherford was right behind in 25:34.05. Both recorded career marks on the IU Championship Cross Country Course. Danny Stockberger took seventh in 26:51.74, and Jacob Rich was eleventh in 27:29.01.
Blanchard finished second in the women's race with a time of 18:46.57. She was followed in by a fellow Carroll High School alum, freshman Samantha Ginther. Ginther finished in 18:58.89. Jenny Kulow took fourth in 19:06.41, and freshman Lyndsey Wall was fifth in 19:13.07.

Sophomore Caitlin Engel was sixth in 19:27.70, and Natalie Goolik took seventh in 19:29.92. Rounding out the top seven for IU was Helene Delone in eighth (19:33.03). Walter took the win with a time of 17:42.56.
