The teams will close out the series at 5:05 p.m. Saturday. WOSU will carry the game live at wosu.org.
Tied at 1-all going into the third period, the Irish took advantage of a 5-minute power play opportunity after Matt Bartkowski was given a major and 10-minute game misconduct at 9:02. Dan Kissel scored just 15 seconds into the power play to give Notre Dame a 2-1 lead.
The Buckeyes killed off the remaining 4:45 of the penalty and had two power play opportunities themselves in the final half of the stanza, but came against some bad luck. With less than seven minutes left in the period, Taylor Stefishen ripped a shot that pinged off the crossbar.
Ohio State then pulled goaltender Dustin Carlson for the 6-on-4 advantage in the final minute and took a timeout with 33 seconds on the clock. After drawing up their play, the Buckeyes fed the puck off the faceoff to Sergio Somma who wound up and broke his stick on the slap shot. Notre Dame's Billy Maday then sailed the puck down into the empty net at 19:42 for the 3-1 final.
The teams exchanged power play goals in the opening period for a 1-1 tie after 20 minutes. Ohio State capitalized on a 5-on-3 power play when junior John Albert picked up a pass from the boards and fired a shot from the slot that flipped in over the glove of ND netminder Mike Johnson at 13:04. Assisting Albert on his second goal of the season were sophomores Zac Dalpe (his fourth) and Stefishen (his third).
Notre Dame evened the score at 14:53 when Calle Ridderwall knocked in the rebound of a shot by Christiaan Minel. Brett Blatchford had the second helper.
Carlson finished the game with 30 saves while moving to 0-4-0 this season. Johnson (2-0-0) had 27 saves for Notre Dame.
Overall, Notre Dame had a 33-28 advantage in shots and was 2-of-9 on the power play. Ohio State was 1-of-7 with the man-advantage.
