COLUMBUS, Ohio – With a pair of wins Sunday in the Buckeye Duals, the No. 3 Ohio State wrestling team is 2-0 after victories over Notre Dame College and Cleveland State in St. John Arena. In the first match of the afternoon, Ohio State downed the Falcons, 34-6, before handing the Vikings a 35-13 loss.
The Buckeyes dropped only two matches for seven points the entire afternoon. Ohio State surrendered a total of 19 points on the day, with 12 given up because of OSU forfeits.
In the early match vs. Notre Dame College, the Scarlet and Gray jumped out to an early 5-0 lead courtesy of a technical fall by sophomore Colt Sponseller at 165 pounds. A native of Glenmont, Ohio, Sponseller beat Victer Crenshaw, 22-7.
Competing for the first time in St. John Arena wearing the Scarlet and Gray, junior Dave Rella tacked on three more points for the Buckeyes at 174 pounds when he decisioned Kurt Wolff, 8-6, to increase Ohio State's lead to 8-0. Rella is a transfer from Penn State and a native of Akron, Ohio.
Up next at 184 pounds, senior Wes Bergman, from Oak Harbor, Ohio, recorded a major decision against Alex Denman, 8-0. Ohio State kept piling on the points at 197, 285 and 125 pounds thanks to a trio of decisions from Cody Gardner, Jason Cook and Nikko Triggas. Gardner, a freshman from Christiansburg, Va., posted a 14-7 decision over Chris Tripp at 197 pounds. Soon after, Cook, a senior from Dayton, Ohio, recorded a 9-3 decision of his own at 285 pounds vs. Justin Tripp. At the top of the lineup, sophomore and Moraga, Calif., native Triggas shut out Tyler Savage with a 6-0 decision.
With the Buckeyes up 21-0, junior Reece Humphrey, a product of Indianapolis, Ind., secured the OSU win when he pinned Paul Rose in 3:27 at 133 pounds. Although the team victory was inevitable, that did not stop 2008 NCAA 141-pound Champion and senior J Jaggers from helping the Buckeyes increase their lead to 30-0 on a 6-0 decision against Adam Koballa. After forfeiting the 149-pound match, the Scarlet and Gray continued its winning trend at 157 pounds. Senior Jason Johnstone tacked on bonus points with his 11-3 major decision against Tom Straughn.

The Buckeyes got right back to work just a little before 3 p.m. in their second match of the day vs. Cleveland State and although they lost two matches vs. the Vikings, it was nearly an identical outcome from their earlier match vs. Notre Dame College.
Again, Sponseller would lead things off for the Buckeyes at 165 pounds and this time he lifted Ohio State to a 6-0 early lead when he pinned Dustin Doty in 2:53. However, the Vikings would cut their deficit in half at 174 pounds. JT Miller was able to hold off Rella for the 8-5 victory at 174 pounds and the Buckeyes were entering the 184-pound division with just a 6-3 lead.
Despite the slim advantage, Ohio State soon had 11 points added to its score after Cleveland State forfeited the 184 weight class and Gardner posted a 19-2 technical fall over Eric Schwartz at 197 pounds.
Cleveland State's Rashard Goff soon brought the Vikings within 10 points at heavyweight when he beat Cook, 17-7.
Ohio State would go on to win four of the next five matches by a combined score of 46-17. That margin of victory does not include Humphrey's second pin (3:47) of the day against Josh Palivoda at 133 pounds. The Buckeyes forfeited 149.
Triggas won a close 6-5 decision against Jordan Keller to increase the Buckeye advantage, 20-7. At 141, Jaggers nearly recorded a fall in the early part of the first period, but nonetheless came away with a 14-2 major decision against Lawrence Cavello. Johnstone ended the day on a high note, posting a technical fall (26-10) over Corey Carlo.
