CANCUN, Mexico - Jorge Campillo, one of the most decorated golfers in Indiana University history, is set to make his PGA Tour debut on Thursday at the Mayakoba Golf Classic in Mexico; less than a year after wrapping up his collegiate career as a Hoosier. The Caceres, Spain native was the 2008-09 IU Athlete of the Year. Campillo will tee it up for the first time on the PGA Tour at 7:50 a.m., starting on the back nine. He will play alongside Justin Bolli and Derek Lamely. Live scoring of the tournament is available at IUHoosiers.com and/or PGATOUR.com. The Mayakoba Golf Classic is being held at the El Camaleon Golf Club in Cancun. Greg Norman served as the architect for the par-70, 6,923-yard golf course which ranked as the 14th-most difficult course (out of 51) on the PGA Tour last season. Since leaving the IU campus, Campillo has competed in numerous PGA European Tour and PGA Challenge Tour events. His time on the European Tour included a top-10 finish at the Madrid Masters in October. Fellow Spaniard and IU Golf teammate, Santiago Quirarte, will serve as Campillo's caddie for the tournament. Quirarte was in the line-up for Indiana's run to the NCAA Championships in 2007-08. Another familiar face down in Mexico for Hoosier fans will be Steve Wheatcroft. Wheatcroft played at IU from 1998-2001 and will also be competing in the PGA Tour event. Campillo, a two-time All-American, tied for second place at the 2008 NCAA Championship. His career scoring average of 72.22 is the second-lowest in school history. Campillo is one of just three Hoosiers to win a Big Ten Championship, Big Ten Golfer of the Year and the Les Bolstad Award in the same season; a feat he accomplished in 2008. Campillo was named the conference's Golfer of the Year in 2009 as well. In four years as a Hoosier, Campillo racked up individual medalist honors nine times, including three tournament titles in each of his final two seasons donning the Cream and Crimson.
Digg | Del.icio.us | Reddit | Newsvine | Email | Print

CORAL SPRINGS, Fla. - The University of Iowa men's golf team defeated the University of Minnesota, Saturday afternoon, to take third place in the second annual Big Ten Match-Play Championships. After losing a tough semifinals match to the eventual champions, Northwestern, the Hawkeyes beat the Golden Gophers 3.5-2.5 to finish the tournament with a 2-1 record. In the morning semifinals round, the Black and Gold lost, 2.5-3.5, in a match against Northwestern that came down to the final individual match. After sophomore Dusty Koth dropped his match, 4&3, sophomores Brad George, Chris Brant and Barrett Kelpin were able to pick up 2.5 points for the Hawkeyes. Both George and Kelpin earned one team point with 3&2 and 1-up wins, respectively, while Brant finished his individual match all square, earning Iowa a half-point. Junior Brad Hopfinger's match ended in a 6&5 loss to Northwestern junior and Golfweek's No. 22 golfer in the nation, Josh Dupont. With junior Vince India left as the only Hawkeye on the course, an individual win would seal the deal for Iowa while a tie would give Northwestern the advantage in a 3-3 team tie with criteria. India and Northwestern's David Lipsky were knotted up after 15 holes, but India dropped holes 16 and 18 to lose 2-up, sending the Hawkeyes to compete against Minnesota for third place. Iowa's final round of the tournament proved to be as much of a nail-biter as the previous two, with Iowa ending up on the good side of a 3.5-2.5 decision over Minnesota. Koth dropped his final individual match, 3&2, before George (3&2) and Brant (2&1) both picked up wins for the Black and Gold. Kelpin then lost a close individual match, 2&1, tying the match. With India winning his individual match, 2&1, it was left in the hands of Hopfinger. The Lake Forest, IL native was down one hole going into the 18th before winning the hole and leaving his individual match tied, giving Minnesota and Iowa one more half-point apiece. That half-point proved to be the difference for the Hawkeyes as it kept the team match from going into a tie-breaker, a situation which would have favored the Golden Gophers. "After a close loss in the morning, it's a tough situation to come back and work for third place, but the guys took it upon themselves to win their individual matches rather than worry about the team win,"" said Head Coach Mark Hankins. "I thought we did a good job in the afternoon of battling, and thankfully we came out on top to finish in third place." Northwestern went on to win the Big Ten Match-Play Championships after beating Purdue six points to none, with all six individual matches being decided on the closing holes. The No. 35 Hawkeyes will travel to Dallas, TX, for the Black and Gold Alumni Match March 6, before competing in the Calloway Collegiate Match-Play March 21-23.
Digg | Del.icio.us | Reddit | Newsvine | Email | Print

UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Penn State men's golf team will not compete in this weekend's Big Ten Match Play Championships due to severe weather conditions that canceled all travel options. The uncontrollable withdrawal was disappointing for the team as it was looking forward to the conference tournament and the start of its spring season. The tournament will still take place Feb. 12-13 despite the absence of Penn State. The Nittany Lions will take a second attempt to compete in their spring opener at the sixth annual Pinehurst Intercollegiate in Pinehurst, N.C., March 12- 14. They look to defend their title as the 2009 Pinehurst Champions. Last year, the Nittany Lions topped the leader board with a two-under par (862) beating nationally ranked opponents No. 34 Michigan State and No. 36 Michigan. Penn State holds the low 54-hole team total record with 852 and the low final-round score of 279. T.J. Howe took home the 2009 individual title with a tournament-record final score of 209.
Digg | Del.icio.us | Reddit | Newsvine | Email | Print

PHOENIX, Ariz. – In its first competition of the spring season, the Indiana women's golf team won its match play competition against Big Ten for Wisconsin, taking the Westlake Cup title 9.5-8.5 Sunday afternoon at Union Hills Golf Club. The teams played a nassau competition, with each pairing having the opportunity to win up to three points, one for low score on the front nine, one for low score on the back nine, and one for overall low score. Senior Laura Nochta had the low round of the day for Indiana with a 71 and picked up 1.5 points. Senior Kellye Belcher shot a 74 for her round and was the only Hoosier to win all three points. Junior Cecilia Orevik posted a 75, earning 2.5 points for the Hoosiers. Freshman Pamela Burneski came home with a 76 but was shut out in points. Freshman Jacqueline Yanch shot a 78 to earn 1.5 points, while freshman Kate Coons also shot a 78 and picked up one point. "I am wildly pleased with what we did today," said head coach Clint Wallman. "We had a great practice round and that carried over today with an outstanding performance on the front nine. We had to hit some clutch shots and we did what we needed down the stretch. The course conditions today were perfect for scoring and we took advantage of it. I was very pleased with our shot selection and execution." Indiana will travel to its first tournament of the spring season Feb. 7-9 at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Nochta is the defending individual medalist, while as a team the Hoosiers will look to improve upon last year's 14th-place finish.
Digg | Del.icio.us | Reddit | Newsvine | Email | Print

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan women's golf coach Cheryl Stacy announced today (Thursday, Jan. 7) the hiring of former Wolverine Chrissie George as Wolverines assistant coach. "I am extremely happy to have Chrissie George as my assistant coach for women's golf," said Stacy. "She will bring a great deal of energy and enthusiasm to the program. Her organizational and administrative skills will be an asset to this team especially with recruiting. Her ties within the Michigan community along with the fact that she played golf for Michigan are key ingredients to getting this program to the next level. She will do a tremendous job and I'm looking forward to having her join the team." "I am thrilled to be the new assistant coach of the women's golf team at the University of Michigan," said George. "I want to thank Coach Cheryl Stacy and the Athletics Department for such an incredible opportunity. I'm honored to be affiliated with such a stellar program and look forward to continuing its momentum of tradition and excellence." For the last five years (2005-10), George worked with the Alumni Association of the University of Michigan as a career services coordinator. She was responsible for developing and maintaining relationships with over 3,000 employers, hiring managers and HR personnel with the goal of providing quality career opportunities for Michigan alumni. She developed "Blue Hiring Blue," a career-based alumni recognition program that continues to engage over 400 alumni and thousands of job opportunities. She was the recipient of the 2007 ""Ultimate Award in Personal Development,"" as voted on by senior leadership and the 2007 "Above and Beyond the Call of Duty Award for Accountability, Pride and Stewardship," as voted on by senior leadership. Prior to her promotion as a career services coordinator, George began her career at Michigan at the U-M Alumni Association as a customer relations representative in 2005. She started her professional career working with Kraben Marketing in Ann Arbor, Mich., where she worked with local business owners advertisements for "Washtenaw for the Home" publication. While attending Michigan, George worked for the "Game of Your Life Foundation" as a tour director with the PowerBilt Junior Golf Tour, which is now the Adams Golf Junior Tour. As the director she supervised the operations for state-wide junior golf tour events of more than 3,000 Michigan-based junior golfers, ages seven to 19. George, who graduated from Michigan with a bachelor's degree in history in 2004, walked onto the Michigan women's golf team as a junior (2002-03) after earning a spot during the fall tryout period. Despite not competing in an event she earned U-M Athletic Academic Achievement honors in her one season with the Wolverines. During her prep days at Marshall High School in Marshall, Mich., she was a four-year varsity golf letterwinner, earning all-state first team honors in 2000 and All-Twin Valley first team honors in 1999 and 2000. She was also the team captain during her senior campaign. She was a four-year honor roll winner at Marshall and graduated with honors.
Digg | Del.icio.us | Reddit | Newsvine | Email | Print

WINDEMERE, Fla. – Illinois finished ninth out of 15 schools at the prestigious Isleworth Invitational that was completed Tuesday. The Illini shot a third round 298 (+10) to finish at 901 (+3), just five strokes out of fifth in a tournament that featured 12 ranked teams. Junior Scott Langley and senior Zach Barlow had solid days for Illinois, each posting final round 73s on the 7,481-yard par 72 Isleworth Golf and Country Club course. Langley (74-77-73) improved 13 places to finish in a tie for 20th in the 75-man field at +8. Barlow, meanwhile, shot his second straight 73 to move into a tie for 29th at +11. Barlow sandwiched teammates Luke Guthrie (73-76-77), who tied for 25th at +10 and junior Chris DeForest (82-71-75), who tied for 33rd at +12. Top-ranked Oklahoma State won the team title at +17 after a final round 301 followed by Florida (+22), Stanford (+24), Georgia (+29) and Alabama (+32). The Crimson Tide's Bud Cauley (-5) posted a one-stroke victory over hard-charging Sihwan Kim (-4) of Stanford. Those were the only two players to shoot under par. For the second straight day, the Illini had an up-and-down round, but in the end shrugged off a first round 306 to post a pair of scores under 300 on the challenging course. The Illini had a better third-round score than six of the eight teams in front of them, but dug themselves too big of a hole. "In the long run, this will be a good experience for us, playing many of the southern schools on their turf," said Illinois head coach Mike Small. "We never could really get any consistency going, but we'll learn from this and get ready for Hawaii." Illinois leaves Friday for the Rainbow State to play in the Turtle Bay Collegiate Invitational on the island of Oahu.
Digg | Del.icio.us | Reddit | Newsvine | Email | Print

RIO GRANDE, P.R. - The fourth-ranked Purdue women's golf served as hosts of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic, and defeated all but one member of the 16-team field, finishing in second place with a three-round team total of 883 (296-295-292=883). Alabama won the team title, recording an 872 (295-287-290=872) for three rounds. Oklahoma State finished in third place (300-288-298=886), Georgia was fourth (292-295-301-888) and Kent State finished fifth ((299-310-297=897). Numa Gulyanamitta led Purdue with a sixth-place finish after carding a one-under par 215 (71-72-72). Gulyanamitta has a No. 12 ranking as an individual according to Golfweek. Purdue junior Thea Hoffmeister was the Boilermakers' highest finisher, tying for fourth place after totaling 213 strokes. Unfortunately, for Purdue, Hoffmeister was competing as an individual and her scores did not count toward the team total. The Berlin, Germany, native opened with a career-low 66, followed by a 73 and then a 74 on Tuesday. Oklahoma State's Caroline Hedwall, the ninth-ranked individual nationally, won the individual title with a total of 209. Hedwall fired a 70 in the final round after carding a scorching seven-under par 65 on Monday. Junior Maude-Aimee LeBlanc recorded Purdue's lowest third-round score, carding a four-under par 68 on Tuesday to move up to a tie for 10th with a total score of 217. LeBlanc opened with a 72 but fired a 77 in the second round. The fifth-ranked individual rebounded nicely in round three to help Purdue to a second place finish. Freshman Laura Gonzalez Escallon tied for 21st (226), finishing the event with a 75 after opening with a 78, followed by a 73 in the second round. Kishi Sinha continued her strong sophomore campaign, finishing tied for 23rd with a total of 227 (75-74-78). Freshman Paula Reto tied for 41st, firing a 232 (79-76-77) that included a 77 in the last round of the tournament. The eighth-annual Lady Puerto Rico Classic was held Feb. 7 to 9 at the Trump International Golf Club on the Championship Course, a par-72, 6,219-yard venue designed by Tom Kite. Purdue head coach Devon Brouse and his charges will return to action Feb. 22 and 23 at the Central Distric Invitational in Tampa, Fla.
Digg | Del.icio.us | Reddit | Newsvine | Email | Print

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Using three Wolverine individual finishes among the top 10, the University of Michigan men's golf team posted an 11-under 853 total to close its fall season with a third-place showing Sunday at the 2009 Bridgestone Intercollegiate at Forest Oaks Country Club. With heavy rains and 30 mph gusty winds on and off throughout Saturday's first 36 holes, the Wolverines got off to a strong start and did not let the elements sway their play as freshman Jack Schultz (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Whitefish Bay) paced played posting U-M's top round of the fall season of six-under 66, while junior Lion Kim (Lake Mary, Fla./Lake Mary Prep School) closed a two-under 70 to give U-M a five-under 283. Continuing play right into the second round, Schultz remained consistent Saturday posting a three-under 69 and Kim equaled the round with a 69 of his own, while sophomore Matt Thompson (Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeview) pitched in a five-under 67 to help U-M equal its top team round of the season at 11-under 277 and put the Wolverines at 16-under 560, putting them atop the leaderboard with a four-shot lead over Georgia Tech and Virginia. With the clouds gone and today's final round play near perfect, the Wolverines could not recapture their strong play for a day earlier. Despite a two-under 70 from Kim and a one-under 71 from Thompson, Michigan posted a five-over 293 to slip out of the lead and closed third at the event. U-M was able to close the event with its second sub-par 54-hole team tally of the season at 11-under 853. Individually, the Wolverines closed with three among the top-10 for the second time this season. Kim led the way tying for sixth at seven-under 209, after he closed with three straight sub-par rounds at the event (70-69-70). Kim's performance marked the fourth event this season a Wolverine closed with three under-par rounds in an event. Behind Kim, Schultz and Thompson shared the 10th position at five-under 211. After getting off to a red hot start on Saturday with a career-best six-under 66 and a three-under 69, he fell off the place closing with a 76 in the final round. Thompson rebounded from a first round one-over 73, posting a five-under 67 in the second round and a one-under 71 in the final round to give him nine sub-par scores in 14 fall rounds. Additional U-M starter finishes included freshman Rahul Bakshi (Chandigarh, India/St. John's) tying for 40th at 222 (74-72-76) and sophomore Alex Frankel (Atlanta, Ga./Lovett School) tying for 53rd at 224 (74-74-76). The Wolverines have completed their fall season and will now have nearly four months away from competition. The next time the Maize and Blue hit the course will be in the 2010 spring opening event -- the Big Ten Match Play Championship, Friday and Saturday (Feb. 12-13). The conference match play event will be at the TPC of Heron Bay in Coral Springs, Fla. Last year, U-M closed as the runner-up in the inaugural event. Team Standings 1.
