WINDEMERE, Fla. – Illinois finished ninth out of 15 schools at the prestigious Isleworth Invitational that was completed Tuesday. The Illini shot a third round 298 (+10) to finish at 901 (+3), just five strokes out of fifth in a tournament that featured 12 ranked teams. Junior Scott Langley and senior Zach Barlow had solid days for Illinois, each posting final round 73s on the 7,481-yard par 72 Isleworth Golf and Country Club course. Langley (74-77-73) improved 13 places to finish in a tie for 20th in the 75-man field at +8. Barlow, meanwhile, shot his second straight 73 to move into a tie for 29th at +11. Barlow sandwiched teammates Luke Guthrie (73-76-77), who tied for 25th at +10 and junior Chris DeForest (82-71-75), who tied for 33rd at +12. Top-ranked Oklahoma State won the team title at +17 after a final round 301 followed by Florida (+22), Stanford (+24), Georgia (+29) and Alabama (+32). The Crimson Tide's Bud Cauley (-5) posted a one-stroke victory over hard-charging Sihwan Kim (-4) of Stanford. Those were the only two players to shoot under par. For the second straight day, the Illini had an up-and-down round, but in the end shrugged off a first round 306 to post a pair of scores under 300 on the challenging course. The Illini had a better third-round score than six of the eight teams in front of them, but dug themselves too big of a hole. "In the long run, this will be a good experience for us, playing many of the southern schools on their turf," said Illinois head coach Mike Small. "We never could really get any consistency going, but we'll learn from this and get ready for Hawaii." Illinois leaves Friday for the Rainbow State to play in the Turtle Bay Collegiate Invitational on the island of Oahu.
Digg | Del.icio.us | Reddit | Newsvine | Email | Print

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- Using three Wolverine individual finishes among the top 10, the University of Michigan men's golf team posted an 11-under 853 total to close its fall season with a third-place showing Sunday at the 2009 Bridgestone Intercollegiate at Forest Oaks Country Club. With heavy rains and 30 mph gusty winds on and off throughout Saturday's first 36 holes, the Wolverines got off to a strong start and did not let the elements sway their play as freshman Jack Schultz (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Whitefish Bay) paced played posting U-M's top round of the fall season of six-under 66, while junior Lion Kim (Lake Mary, Fla./Lake Mary Prep School) closed a two-under 70 to give U-M a five-under 283. Continuing play right into the second round, Schultz remained consistent Saturday posting a three-under 69 and Kim equaled the round with a 69 of his own, while sophomore Matt Thompson (Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeview) pitched in a five-under 67 to help U-M equal its top team round of the season at 11-under 277 and put the Wolverines at 16-under 560, putting them atop the leaderboard with a four-shot lead over Georgia Tech and Virginia. With the clouds gone and today's final round play near perfect, the Wolverines could not recapture their strong play for a day earlier. Despite a two-under 70 from Kim and a one-under 71 from Thompson, Michigan posted a five-over 293 to slip out of the lead and closed third at the event. U-M was able to close the event with its second sub-par 54-hole team tally of the season at 11-under 853. Individually, the Wolverines closed with three among the top-10 for the second time this season. Kim led the way tying for sixth at seven-under 209, after he closed with three straight sub-par rounds at the event (70-69-70). Kim's performance marked the fourth event this season a Wolverine closed with three under-par rounds in an event. Behind Kim, Schultz and Thompson shared the 10th position at five-under 211. After getting off to a red hot start on Saturday with a career-best six-under 66 and a three-under 69, he fell off the place closing with a 76 in the final round. Thompson rebounded from a first round one-over 73, posting a five-under 67 in the second round and a one-under 71 in the final round to give him nine sub-par scores in 14 fall rounds. Additional U-M starter finishes included freshman Rahul Bakshi (Chandigarh, India/St. John's) tying for 40th at 222 (74-72-76) and sophomore Alex Frankel (Atlanta, Ga./Lovett School) tying for 53rd at 224 (74-74-76). The Wolverines have completed their fall season and will now have nearly four months away from competition. The next time the Maize and Blue hit the course will be in the 2010 spring opening event -- the Big Ten Match Play Championship, Friday and Saturday (Feb. 12-13). The conference match play event will be at the TPC of Heron Bay in Coral Springs, Fla. Last year, U-M closed as the runner-up in the inaugural event. Team Standings 1.
COLUMBIA, Mo. -- The Wisconsin women's golf team notched a first-place finish at the Johnie Imes Invitational on Tuesday afternoon. This marks the Badgers first 54-hole tournament win since Wisconsin tallied a 904 on October 19, 1999 at the Bale Chevrolet-Honda Invitational in Little Rock, Ark. On Tuesday, the Badgers clinched the top spot at the par-72, 6,204-yard Club at Old Hawthorne by five strokes with a 908 (309-299-301) over second place Tulsa (301-305-306--912). Atkinson, WI) finished only a stroke behind to take second with a 7-over-par 223 (72-74-77). Schemm shared the second place position with Missouri's Michelle Morgan (79-71-73). Schemm started the tournament off strong with steady play, balancing four bogeys with four birdies in the first round to finish at an even-par 72. Holes 7, 10, 11 and 13 presented Schemm with some challenges, but she answered with birdies on Nos. 3,5,8 and 15 to round up the second set of 18 with a 2-over-par 74. The righty faced her toughest round of the tournament in the last 18-holes finishing with 77, but stayed even-par on the hole No. 6, the longest hole of the course. The Badger duo of Sophomore Jessie Gerry (Madison, Wis.) and senior Kelsey Verbeten (Green Bay, Wis.) tied for twelfth place. The teammates finished five strokes behind Schemm with a 228. Gerry saw her best round during the second 18 holes of play when she finished with three birdies for a 2-over-par 74. Verbeten made up for a tough first round of a 11-over-par 83 in rounds 2 and 3.
GLENVIEW, Ill. - The sixth-ranked Purdue women's golf team won its second consecutive tournament and junior Maude-Aimee LeBlanc took home her second straight individual championship Tuesday at the Windy City Collegiate Classic. The Boilermakers held off the field of 15 teams, firing a final round 296 to finish four-under par with a team score of 860. LeBlanc carded a 74 in the third round, but after opening with a 68-69 she had enough of a lead to earn first place. Her 54-hole total of 211 is the second lowest of her career, after firing a personal-best 210 in her win at the Lady Northern Invitational on Sept. 27 and 28. At the Windy City Classic, Michigan's Ashley Bauer finished second with a four-under par 212. Purdue junior Numa Gulyanamitta finished fourth with a two-under par 214. She finished with a 73 on Tuesday after recording a 70-71 in the first two rounds. Freshman Laura Gonzalez Escallon continued her strong play as a rookie, finishing tied for sixth with a one-over par 217 (70-74-73) and brining to three the number of Boilermakers in the top six. She finished in the top 10 of each of the three tournaments Purdue has competed in this season. Kishi Sinha tied for 12th with a three-round total of 219. She opened with a 70-73 on Monday and fired a 76 in the second round. After averaging 66th place in tournaments as a freshman, Sinha has finished in the top 25 in all three events this fall. Freshman Paula Reto finished tied for 54th with a 231 (78-73-80). The Boilermakers finished 14 strokes ahead of second-place Tulane (295-289-290=874), Arizona finished third (288-294-303=885) while host Northwestern (292-296-302=890) and Notre Dame(292-297-301=890) tied for fourth. Full results are posted above. Purdue has one tournament remaining in the fall season, the Landfall Tradition in Wilmington, N.C., on Oct. 23 to 25. It will be played at the Country Club of Landfall, the site of the 2010 NCAA Championships and will serve as the NCAA Preview.
Digg | Del.icio.us | Reddit | Newsvine | Email | Print

GLENCOE, Ill. – The tournament lead ping-ponged back-and-forth Monday afternoon at the Windon Memorial Classic. In the end, though, No. 7 Illinois pulled away for a six-shot victory over host Northwestern, claiming its second straight title in the event and second championship in three tournaments this fall. The morning began with the Illini holding a three-shot lead over Michigan with a few holes left in the second round. The Illini got a two-under par 69 from junior Chris DeForest in the second round at the 7,081-yard Skokie Country Club, then got consistent performances from the entire club in the third and final round, which included a 69 from sophomore Luke Guthrie en route to a final team score of +16. The Illini had two solid rounds of + 1 (285) and +2 (286) after a first-round +13 (297). Illinois finished tournament at +16 followed by Northwestern (+22), Kent State (+24), Eastern Michigan (+30) and first-round leader Michigan (+36). Tennessee, which had entered the day No. 1 in the Golfweek computer rankings and No. 6 in the Golf World/Nike Coaches' poll, finished seventh in the tournament at +39. "It just shows the resiliency of this club," said Illinois head coach Mike Small, whose team has now won 12 tournaments in the last 2+ seasons. "We had five good, solid players who have made winning a habit and we closed like champions." Junior Scott Langley, ranked No. 2 in the country in the Golfweek/Sagarin computer rankings, paced the Illini at +3 after posting even par 71 in the final two rounds, to tie for third, two strokes behind co-medalists Brett Cairns of Kent State and Dan Obremski of Coastal Carolina. ""We're never going to give up no matter how far down we are,"" Langley said. ""We got more and more comfortable with the golf course as the tournament went on. Personally, I was able to shake off a tough start with some birdies down the stretch. In the end, we showed the depth and consistency of this team."" In a format which scores four of the top five from each round, the Illini threw out a 74 in the third round, which demonstrates the fact that everyone contributed to the victory. Individually, the Illini had three players in the top 10 and four in the top 15. Guthrie closed with four birdies in his final five holes and totaled five birdies overall in his final round 69 to finish in a tie for fifth at +5. Senior Matt Hoffman, meanwhile, had consistent rounds of 72-73-74 to tie for ninth at +6. Senior Zach Barlow shot 72 (+1) in the third round to tie for 14th at +8. Junior Chris DeForest finished strong with rounds of 69-74 to tie for 30th in the 81-man field at +10. Ross Frankenberg played as an individual and finished at +25. Illinois entered the day ranked No. 4 in the Golfweek/Sagarin computer rankings and No. 10 according to the Golfstat computer. With the victory over Tennessee, the Illini now have finished in front of five Top-25 teams in the first three tournaments. Illinois has a few weeks to prepare for the final two tournaments of the fall – the Isleworth Invitational Oct. 25-27 and the Turtle Bay Collegiate Invitational in Kahuku, Hawaii Nov. 2-4 -- where the Illini will face even more of the country's top teams. "We have a few things to work on before then," Small said. "We're happy with the way we attacked a very tough golf course and was determined to finish strong."
Digg | Del.icio.us | Reddit | Newsvine | Email | Print

CHICAGO, Ill. -- Senior Ashley Bauer (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) tied the 54-hole school record with a four-under 212 to earn medalist runner-up and help the University of Michigan women's golf team tie for sixth today (Tuesday, Oct. 6) with a season-best 895 total at the 2009 Windy City Collegiate and the Glen Club. The Wolverines got off to a strong start in the 15-team tournament as Bauer and junior Min Yean Tan (Penang Island, Malaysia/Hills International College [Australia]) combined for three-under par in the first 36 holes. Bauer's first-round, one-under 71 and second-round, even-par 72, combined with back-to-back career-best, one-under 71s from Tan, helped U-M post team scores of 301 and a season-best 292 yesterday (Monday, Oct. 5), which placed the Wolverines seventh after the first day of play. Using a three-under 69, which included six birdies, and a season-best 75 from junior Katelin Davis (Dexter, Mich./Dexter), the Wolverines closed with a 302 final round. However, U-M only moved up one spot into a tie for sixth with New Mexico, which dropped from third to sixth after a final-round 312. Bauer's sub-par tallies helped her tie her own U-M record for a 54-hole event as she closed as the medalist runner-up for the second time this season with a four-under 212. After getting off to a red-hot start, Tan fell in the final round, posting an 81 to give her a 223 event total, good for an 18th-place tie -- her first top-20 finish of the season. Sophomore Meagan Bauer (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) posted her third straight top-50 performance, tying for 47th at 230 (80-73-77), while Davis closed with a career-best 240 (79-83-75), putting her tied for 66th. Senior Andrea Ratigan (Tucson, Ariz./Sabino) rounded out U-M's starting five, tying for 75th at 243 (83-76-84), while junior/sophomore Jenn Cleary (East Lansing, Mich./East Lansing) made her season debut and competed in her first career 54-hole tournament, posting a career-best 242 total and a 74th-place finish. After three events in the first four weeks of the school year, the Wolverines will get the upcoming weekend off and will qualify throughout the time for the Lady Pirate Intercollegiate, Monday and Tuesday (Oct. 19-20). The 54-hole event hosted by East Carolina, will be played at the Greenville Country Club in Greenville, N.C. Team Standings 1. Purdue 279-285-296 = 860 (-4) 2.
Wolverines claim home tournament title

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- With a trio of Wolverines finishing among the top 10 individually, the University of Michigan men's golf team posted its third straight sub-par round to hold on to its lead and win the first tournament of the season today (Sunday, Sept. 27) at the 2009 Wolverine at Radrick Farms. The win extends U-M's streak of earning at least one team title to three seasons. With the U-M football team hosting Indiana on Saturday, the Wolverines' normal home course -- the U-M Golf Course -- was unavailable. Therefore, the Maize and Blue shifted the 14-team event to its alternate Ann Arbor Course -- Radrick Farms Golf Club. Despite the secondary location, U-M maintained its home-course advantage as the Wolverines were the only team to post three straight under-par team rounds on their way to a seven-stroke win. Their 54-hole total of 840 is just a single shot off the U-M 54-hole school record. The Wolverines built an 11-shot lead after Saturday's first 36 holes with team rounds of 11-under 277 and 10-under 278 in the first and second rounds, respectively. In the final round, the Wolverine putters cooled off slightly, but U-M still closeed with a three-under 285 in the third and final round to hold off Arkansas (278-288-281), which closed seven shots back at 847, and Louisville (293-285-278), which closed at 856. Junior Lion Kim (Lake Mary, Fla./Lake Mary Prep School) did not hold on to his first-day lead as Arkansas' Jamie Marshall caught fire in the final round, using a seven-under 65 to vault past Kim for the individual win by a single shot at 206 (70-71-65). Kim closed with a career-best finish as runner-up after posting a career-best, nine-under 207 (69-67-71). Sophomore teammate Matt Thompson (Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeview HS), who also closed at nine-under 207 (69-70-68), shared runner-up honors with Kim. Thompson's runner-up finish gives him two top-three finishes. He has also shot six consecutive rounds under par and five under 70 to start the season. Meanwhile, freshman Jack Schultz (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Whitefish Bay HS) used a career-best, six-under 210 (69-69-72) to help the Wolverines place three individuals among the top 10, tying for seventh with two others. Freshman Rahul Bakshi (Chandigarh, India/St. John's HS) and sophomore Alex Frankel (Atlanta, Ga./Lovett School) rounded out the Wolverine starting five as Bakshi tied for 32nd at 222 (76-72-74) and Frankel tied for 44th at 224 (70-76-78). Senior Michael Slovitt (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier HS) highlighted the U-M individuals, tying for 58th at 227 (77-73-77), while freshman Miguel Echavarria (Medellin, Colombia/The Columbus School) tied for 61st at 228 (76-72-80) in his first collegiate event after walking onto the team a week ago. The Wolverines continue their fall season, heading to Glencoe, Ill., Sunday and Monday (Oct. 4-5) for the 2009 Windon Memorial Classic. The 54-hole tournament will be held at the Skokie Country Club. Last year, U-M finished seventh in the event, held at the North Shore Country Club. Team Standings 1. Michigan 277-278-285 = 840 (-21) 2.
RICHMOND, Va., - The Penn State men's golf team wrapped up at the VCU Shootout tying for fourth place with Iowa and Virginia Tech. The Nittany Lions finished at 17-over par with a three-round card of 300-288-293 (881). The Lions were just nine strokes back from first place team, N. Car. Wilmington, who finished at eight-over par (872). "Considering how we started so poorly in rounds one and two, the team battled back from the tail end of the field to a very respectable fourth place finish," said head coach Greg Nye. "The guys showed great heart." Seniors T.J. Howe (Osceola, Pa.) and Kevin Foley (Somerville, N.J.) led the way for the Nittany Lions, both finishing in top 10 positions. Howe carded his Nittany Lion career all-time low score of 68 in the second round and finished tied for fourth, 73-68-76 (217). Howe was seven shots shy of tournament champion Corey Nagy of Charlotte, who shot a three-round total of 210. Foley finished tied for 10th at two-over par, 74-72-72 (218). This marks Foley's 11th top-10 finish of his Lion Career. "T.J. gave a huge lift yesterday afternoon going four-under," said Nye. "He recognized we needed to dig our heels in and fight our way back into contention and that leadership is important when things are not going our way." Bridgeville native, Jim Markovitz (Bridgeville, Pa.) finished tied for 24th with a total of 221. Markovitz had his best round today, shooting two-under par (70) and jumping 13 places on the leaderboard. Junior Tommy McDonagh (Wilton, Conn.) finished at nine-over par (225) with rounds of 77-73-75. Junior Jason Cohan (Wayne, Pa.) shot his best round of the tournament today, 77, to wrap up his total at 80-79-77 (236). The Nittany Lions will resume action on Oct. 10-12 in Macon, Ga., at the Brickyard Intercollegiate. "Going into the Brickyard in Georgia, against an excellent field, we will need more depth. With Archambalt out with an injury I am going to need a player to step in to our five position,"" said Nye, "I am going to need them to give us stronger and better scoring support than we have seen to date."
Digg | Del.icio.us | Reddit | Newsvine | Email | Print

MADISON, Wis. – After weather forced a delay of second round play on Sunday, the Indiana women's golf team completed action at the Lady Northern Invitational on Monday with a seventh-place finish at University Ridge Golf Course in Madison, Wis. The Hoosiers finished with a 296 in the second round and a 311 in the third round for a total of 910 (+46). Purdue won the title at +1 (865), followed by Ohio State (878/+14), Michigan State (878/+14), Northwestern (889/+25) and Iowa State (892/+28) in the top five. ""The conditions were tough today and I don't think we handled it as well as we could have,"" said head coach Clint Wallman. ""Kate (Coons) really came on in the final round, but we let the wind, rain and cold affect our play. That is something we need to work on."" Laura Nochta led the Hoosiers, finishing tied for 18th at +9 (75-72-78/225). She began the third round -1 after two holes with a birdie on two but was tripped up by bogeys on three and five to drop to +1. Back-to-back double bogeys on seven and eight put her at +5, but things improved after she made the turn as she went -1 over the next seven holes with a birdie on 13. The day ended with bogeys on 17 and 18. Nochta opened her second round with a birdie on one, and after bogeys on four and seven came back with birdies on nine and 10 to move to -1. She pared the next seven holes but ended the round with an even 72 after a bogey on 18. Kellye Belcher finished alone in 34th with a tally of 230 (76-78-76/+14). She bogeyed three of the first four holes in the third round but came back with pars on her next five tries. Back-to-back bogeys on 11 and 12 put her at +5. Belcher found her rhythm after that, going -1 over the next six holes with a birdie on 17. She pared 18 and one to end the day at +4. In the second round, Belcher recorded pars on her first five holes before a bogey on seven put her at +1. She had another bogey on 10 but was cruising along with pars on the next five holes before a double bogey on 16. She added bogeys on holes 18 and one to finish with a 6-over 78. Anita Gahir finished 44th at +18 (78-74-82/234). The third round began with bogeys on four of the first seven holes to fall to +4, and she added a double bogey on nine to make the turn at +6. She picked up pars on 10, 11 and 13 but added bogeys on 12 and 14 to add another two strokes to her score. A birdie on 15 was followed by bogeys on 16, 17 and 18 to end the day. Gahir was at +1 after three holes in the second round but carded a two on the par-3 eighth hole and added another birdie with a four on the par-5 ninth hole to move to -1. Back-to-back bogeys on 12 and 13 put her back up at +1, but another bogey on 15 was negated with a birdie on 16. She ended the round with a 2-over 74 after a par on 17 and a bogey on 18. Kate Coons made a comeback on the final day to finish tied for 46th at +20 (80-81-75/236). She opened the final round with a birdie on four and was holding strong until a bogey on eight and a double on nine to drop to +2. Another bogey on 12 put her at 3-over, but she added her second birdie of the round with a three on the par-4 13th hole. The score relief was short-lived with another double bogey on 14. Coons recorded pars on the next three holes before closing out 18 with a bogey. She played some of her best golf of the day over the final three holes, recording the firs eagle by an IU player this season on the par-5 second hole to come into the clubhouse at +3. In round two, Coons was 5-over after just three holes with bogeys on four and five, and a triple bogey on six. She would par four of the next six holes with bogeys on eight and 12, but came up with her first birdie of the round on the par-4 13th hole. Another triple bogey on 15 left her at 9-over, and a birdie on two was followed by a bogey on three to finish the round with an 81. Pamela Burneski tied for 52nd with a score of 237 (74-77-86/237). She got off to a slow start in the final round with double bogeys on two and four, followed by three-straight bogeys on five, six and seven to drop to +7. The stretch of holes 10 through 12 were unkind with bogeys on 10 and 12 sandwiching a double bogey on 11. Her first birdie of the round came on the par-4 14th hole to move to +10, but a bogey on 16 and one with a double on 18 left her at +14 for the round. Burneski pared six of her first eight holes but had bogeys on dour and nine to sit at +2. She remained at 2-over until a three-hole string of bogeys from holes 14 through 17 set up a final score of 77 (+5). Rounding out the IU contingent was Cecilia Orevik who tied for 52nd at +21 (78-73-86/237). She was off to a slow start in the final round with bogeys on four and five, followed by a double bogey on seven and singles on eight and nine to fall to +6. She came back to par four of the next five holes, but her stretch on the back nine ended with bogeys on 15, 16, 17 and 18. Orevik closed out the round with a double bogey on one and a bogey on 18 to finish at +14. Orevik was 1-under after three holes in the second round thanks to a birdie on the par-3 fifth hole. A bogey on six and a double bogey on eight tacked two strokes onto her score, but she bounced back to 1-under over the next eight holes with birdies on 13 and 16 and just a lone bogey on 12. Her birdie on 16 was followed by a bogey on 17, but she came home with two pars and a birdie on two to finish with a 1-over 73. The Hoosiers return to the course Oct. 5-6 at the Johnie Imes Invitational in Columbia, Mo.
<a href='http://digg.com/submit?phase=2&url=http://www.bigtennetwork.com/news/article.asp?LIST_ID=25&STORY_ID=3369709&title=IU%20women's%20golf%20takes%207th' target='_blank'>Digg | <a href='http://del.icio.us/post/?url=http://www.bigtennetwork.com/news/article.asp?LIST_ID=25&STORY_ID=3369709&title=IU%20women's%20golf%20takes%207th' target='_blank'>Del.icio.us | <a href='http://reddit.com/submit?url=http://www.bigtennetwork.com/news/article.asp?LIST_ID=25&STORY_ID=3369709&title=IU%20women's%20golf%20takes%207th' target='_blank'>Reddit | Newsvine | <a href='http://www.bigtennetwork.com/tellafriend.asp?URL=http://www.bigtennetwork.com/news/article.asp?LIST_ID=25&STORY_ID=3369709&page_name=IU%20women's%20golf%20takes%207th' target='_blank'>Email | Print
