The University of Iowa women's basketball team defeated Northern Iowa, 81-70. Iowa now leads the all-time series, 13-2, including a 7-1 mark in Cedar Falls.
Sophomore Kamille Wahlin recorded career-highs in points (33), field goals made (11) and three-point field goals made (6). She finished with a game-high 33 points on 11-19 shooting, including 6-10 from behind the arc. She was also 5-6 from the free-throw line and played all 40 minutes. Wahlin was also one three-pointer away from tying the school record for treys made in a game (seven, Lindsey Meder vs. Wisconsin, 12/31/00).
Freshman Morgan Johnson tied a school record with seven blocked shots against Northern Iowa. Johnson now holds the record with Jerica Watson (vs. Kent State, 12/8/01) and Tangela Smith (at Michigan State, 1/15/95). Johnson also added 11 points and eight rebounds.
Freshmen Theairra Taylor (fractured eye socket) and Gabby Machado (sprained ankle) both returned to the court Sunday after being sidelined with injuries. Taylor finished with 12 points, seven rebounds and two steals in 24 minutes of action, including eight points in the final two minutes. Machado played three minutes and finished with two points.
Three of Iowa's four leading scorers were freshmen, including Jaime Printy (12), Theairra Taylor (12) and Morgan Johnson (11).
Junior Kelsey Cermak registered her first career start Sunday at Northern Iowa, starting for the injured Kachine Alexander. Cermak had three rebounds and an assist.
Iowa shot a season-high .519 (28-54) from the field, .471 (8-17) from three-point and .810 (17-21) from the free-throw line.
The Hawkeyes had four players log at least 30 minutes, including Wahlin (40), Kelly Krei (32), Jaime Printy (32) and Morgan Johnson (31).
Iowa returns to action Tuesday at 7 p.m. against William & Mary.
